Parent FAQs

What options are available to my child after Year 11?
After Year 11, students can choose to continue their education in a school sixth form or college, studying A-Levels, T-Levels, or vocational qualifications such as BTECs. Another option is an apprenticeship, where students combine paid work with training. We support all students in exploring these pathways to find the best fit for their future.

How do I know which pathway is right for my child?
The right pathway will depend on your child’s strengths, interests, and preferred learning style. We encourage students to consider whether they prefer academic study, practical learning, or a mix of both, as well as their longer-term goals. Our school provides guidance to help families make informed decisions.

What are the differences between A-Levels, T-Levels, and BTECs (V-Levels)?
A-Levels are academic qualifications, usually assessed through exams, and are well suited to students who enjoy subject-based study. T-Levels combine classroom learning with an industry placement, offering a more technical route. BTECs are vocational qualifications that focus on practical skills and are often assessed through coursework.

What grades does my child need for different courses?
Entry requirements vary depending on the course and provider. Generally, students will need a set number of GCSE passes, often including English and maths. More competitive courses may require higher grades. We provide clear guidance to help students understand the requirements for their chosen pathways.

Can my child still go to university if they don’t take A-Levels?
Yes, many universities accept alternative qualifications such as BTECs and T-Levels. There are multiple routes into higher education, and we support students in understanding how their chosen pathway can lead to university if that is their goal.

What is an apprenticeship and how do they apply for one?
An apprenticeship allows students to work for an employer while studying towards a qualification. Students earn a salary and gain valuable work experience. Apprenticeships are advertised throughout the year, and students apply directly to employers, with support from the school.

When should my child start applying for post-16 options?
Students should begin researching options in the autumn term of Year 11. Applications for sixth forms and colleges usually take place between late autumn and early spring, while apprenticeship opportunities can be available at different times throughout the year. Starting early helps ensure deadlines are not missed.

What if my child doesn’t know what career they want?

This is completely normal. We encourage students to focus on subjects they enjoy and are good at, keep their options open, and explore different career pathways over time. This helps build confidence and a clearer sense of direction.

How can I support my child without putting too much pressure on them?
You can support your child by listening, asking open questions, and encouraging them to take ownership of their research and applications. Keeping conversations positive and reminding them that there is no single “perfect” pathway can help reduce pressure.

Where can we find reliable careers information and advice?
Families can access support through our school’s Careers Advisor and Director of Enrichment, as well as official government websites, college and sixth form open days, and trusted careers resources. We are always available to provide guidance and answer any questions.

How can our organisation get involved in supporting the school’s careers programme?
We welcome employer involvement in a variety of ways, including careers talks, industry workshops, mentoring, work experience placements, and participation in careers events. We aim to build meaningful partnerships that give students real insight into the world of work.

What types of activities can we take part in (e.g. talks, workshops, work experience, mock interviews)?
Employers can support us through a wide range of activities such as delivering assemblies or classroom sessions, hosting workplace visits, offering work experience placements, supporting mock interviews, attending careers fairs, or contributing to curriculum-linked projects.

What are the benefits for our business in working with the school?
Working with us allows you to support the development of future talent, raise awareness of your industry, and engage with young people in a meaningful way. It also provides opportunities for staff development and strengthens your organisation’s links with the local community.

How much time commitment is typically required from employers?
This can vary depending on the activity. Some opportunities, such as careers talks or mock interviews, may only require a few hours, while others, like offering work experience placements, involve a longer commitment. We are flexible and happy to work around your availability.

How do you match employers with students or ensure activities are relevant to our industry?
We work closely with employers to understand your sector and tailor opportunities to ensure they are relevant and impactful. We consider students’ interests, career aspirations, and curriculum links to create meaningful and engaging experiences.

Who should we contact to express interest or discuss partnership opportunities?
Employers can contact our Careers Advisor or Director of Enrichment, who will be happy to discuss opportunities and help plan how you can get involved in a way that works best for you.
